contemporary ceramics
found...formed...fired
As a potter and mudlarker, I am drawn to the stories that lie beneath the surface. The foreshore of the River Thames continually reveals fragments of lives once lived—small pieces of history that have patiently waited to be rediscovered.
Some of these finds find their way into my work, where they become part of a new narrative. I take great pleasure in uncovering these forgotten objects, liberating them from their watery grave and allowing them to be seen once again. Through my ceramics, I seek to honour their journey and breathe fresh life into the stories they still have to tell.
My making process is an important part of that storytelling. I use alternative firing techniques, including smoke firing, which create rich surfaces, subtle markings and a sense of age and patina. These atmospheric processes often leave traces that feel weathered by time, echoing the character of the objects that inspire the work.
Text is also a recurring element within my pieces. Words may be applied, obscured, retained or partially removed during the making and firing process. Much like the finds themselves, only fragments of the original story may remain. I am fascinated by these traces and absences—the way they invite us to imagine what has been lost, what survives, and what can still be discovered.

Smoke fired pieces inspired by mud larking finds
A passionate licensed mud larker, I often use the treasures that I find in foreshore adventures. I love the stories that they hold, quietly lost on the foreshore of the Thames, I often use text on my smoke fired pieces, handwritten in ink and often lost, retained or resisted by the smoke. I hope this adds an air of mystery and history to the pieces.
I also enjoy using screen printed, hand drawn imagery that again is affected by the firing processes.
